Abstract
This chapter explores the possible role of Tactical Urbanism in shaping resilient and sustainable post-oil urban environments. It contends that Tactical Urbanism, with its grassroots approach and emphasis on quick, low-cost, and often bottom-up interventions, is particularly well-suited to address the socio-economic, cultural, and environmental challenges posed by the decline of oil-dependent economies. It argues that Tactical Urbanism’s ability to rapidly prototype and implement solutions offers a dynamic platform for communities to adapt to the changing urban landscapes and economies in the post-oil era.
This chapter presents an innovative approach to envisioning post-oil urban landscapes, integrating Tactical Urbanism with a comprehensive STEEPV (Social, Technological, Economic, Environmental, Political, and Values) analysis. The methodology begins with a bibliometric analysis of existing literature, identifying key trends and gaps in Tactical Urbanism and urban resilience. By focusing on the drivers of resilience development, the study aims to identify key trends and uncertainties and then to develop multiple future urban scenarios, reflecting the complex interplay of social, technological, economic, environmental, political, and value-based changes. The synthesis of these findings leads to the development of a framework/blueprint, proposing how Tactical Urbanism can be strategically integrated into urban planning and policy-making to navigate the challenges and leverage the opportunities in post-oil urban environments. This chapter discusses the broader implications of this framework for urban planners, policymakers, and community stakeholders, focusing on how Tactical Urbanism can influence sustainable, resilient, and adaptable urban spaces in the face of future uncertainties.
