Tactical Urbanism is a grass-root approach to urbanism however it is increasingly becoming a platform to spread ideas and organize for change. The combination of long-term planning with fast and inexpensive transformation strategies, as well as an effective formula for putting good ideas into practice, can be a tool to articulate and stimulate the exercise of citizenship and positive impact on quality of life.
Tactical Urbanism as the movement that uses rapid, small and/or temporary projects to demonstrate the possibility and potential for large-scale and long-term changes.
Tactical Urbanism is truly worthwhile examples of how individuals and small groups can make a city-wide and even national positive long term impact by starting small-scale, short-term and low-cost (and often surprisingly low-tech) and even unauthorized interventions homemade signs and benches, pop-up parks and pedestrian plazas; Useless areas or lifeless places like an abandoned parking lot, can be transformed into public spaces of coexistence and leisure and bring more happiness and quality of life to people.
Initiatives like this make the difference in cities, and the challenge is to keep them alive. By giving new directions to places through rapid changes, Tactical Urbanism creates cities that are more environmentally friendly and often motivates people to rethink their habits through the different encounters and exchanges these spaces make possible.
